In Barrie, Ontario Veterans can park at all on-street parking meters and all municapally-owned off street metered parking lots for the maximum time allowed. One condition is that the Veterans vehicle display a valid veteran licence plate which are available to the provinces license issuing offices.
While some cities offer free parking to Veterans with plate all year round some cities only permit this on Remembrance Day in Canada and Memorial Day weekend in the United States.
Living in Calgary, Alberta I know we have the highest average for parking in all of Canada and I'm sure most of our veterans could not afford up to $30.00 a day in some downtown parking lots or even the basic meter lots.

I do, however I live in the UK, i would recommend free parking to all veterans all over.

In Texas I could use my disabled veteran plates to park free almost everywhere, sense I moved to nyc, no one cares.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt they should be able too!! How could anyone even try to protest this!! If it wasn't for all the Military serving and who has served alot of us wouldn't be here now!! We could never pay them and their families back for what they have done for us, never!! I think alot of things should be made alot easier for them, not just the parking!! Lets try to at least try to pay some of the respect and consideration they so honorably deserve!! God Bless Our Troops and Veterans!!

ReplyDeleteMy husband is a 100% disabled Veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Vietnam War. As an avid supporter of all things Vet related this is one I do not support. The disabled parking is very hard to find in most places in the U.S. and I state this as we have traveled extensively both in the U.S. and the Canadian Provinces. For those Vets deemed to have disabilities in the U.S. Veterans system it is a simple process to apply to your state DMV and the handicap designation is covered for parking. To add Vets that are healthy and able to walk would only serve to place more pressure in those few available spaces, possibly taking them from more deserving Vets and other disabled. I do think if we want to honor Vets with preferred parking we could reserve a few spaces beyond the handicap spaces for their use. As far as paid parking by all means any place that a charge is required these deserving individuals should be so honored as to be allowed to park free. As the spouse of a vet who has lost the use of his legs and now arms due to a war time injury it is heartwarming to see the support of people around the world for them. One thing that has happened however since the wars have started in the middle east is that the general public has forgotten that before these young men who are being injured so severely there was another generation before them who had the same thing happen to them at these young ages and are now becoming senior citizens, and that long before the current crop of injuries our dad and granddads had the same thing happen and we not only must remember the newest vets but we must remember the older ones too. We have 4 sons and each of them have served in the military and I could not be more proud or them and their Dad. Please keep supporting these brave warriors without them our country would look much different.

WHAT HAVE YOU, AS A VETERAN, AND HAVING RESPECT FOR ALL VETERANS, THEY DESERVE MORE THAN FREE PARKING! BUT WE WILL TAKE WHAT WE GET! AS THE VAST MAJORITY OF US, DONT ASK FOR ANYTHING ANYWAY! DeleteI agree with Joe. They never mentioned anything about taking up the handicap parking spots. The plates are just to show that they have served in the Military. I understand that you feel that our older Veterans are being forgotten, but I must say that you obviously have not gone to a VA hospital, all veterans are honored, young and old, and the government is continuously trying to improve the care of the veterans. At least in my home city and state, San Antonio,TX, I have been going to the VA hospital since I was 24 in 1989. I am proud that your sons have served in the Military, give them a hug for me. I am now disabled, but I have not applied for DV license plate because I know that there are many people, like your husband that need these handicap parking spots, more than I do. As for our injured and returning Military folks. They are being remembered more now,because what happened when the Vietnam Vets returned they were not given the proper welcome and appreciation that they deserved. We learn from our mistakes, I am proud of all those men and women who have accepted the sacrifice to help the USA and other countries preserve our freedom. May the Lord bless all of us.

ReplyDeleteSome visits to doctors, etc, can be lengthy and costly.
That being said, my husband, and my son, both USMC, feel that they are owed nothing! My husband could get a disabled plate, but since he is able to walk, etc, he says he won't, as he doesn't feel he needs one!
Let the ones that need it have it!
Finding a parking spot is a nightmare for an absolute majority of us, however, it's good to realize that e.g. parking situation in Toronto is actually not that bad when we complain often. It’s true that prices are quite high and yes, giving 30 dollars a day is a problem, not only for elder people. But our Veterans are should get this favor from us, we owe them much more. Small things are sign of our respect and gratitude.
